John graduated with a B.Sc. Geology degree from Queen Mary College in 1978 and then experienced his first foray in the petroleum industry as a traineee wireline engineer for Schlumberger in the Middle East.

In 1979 he joined Exploration Logging and was based in Singapore, working in many locations around the Far East, and also Pakistan and Australia.
